Yeah, that's pay-dirt. :-)

So for some reason, the adonthell *library*, not tools, adds this to its
own .la files.

I don't know when you've last built the library portion.  If it is recently,
then we need to continue debugging.  Otherwise, a rebuild there may fix it.

Do you use the autoconf or cmake build for the library?
