Hi at adr-devel,
the last posting on this list was in mid-july, not much for a
developers list ;-)
I just want to update you on some thoughts.
---
There was a new thread discussing the old tar/dump-topic on
amanda-users, read it here:
http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?t=106289509800001&r=1&w=2
In the end it seems to be better to use gnu-tar, as I do it in my
Amanda-installations. I prefer gnutar and see no reason to support it
in ADR. There are no advantages in using dump, it just adds complexity
to use and support two different dumping-binaries.
---
I worked on adr_backup.sh a bit, did some fixes and enhancements as
well as some cosmetics. I will put it into cvs soon. Nothing
groundbreaking has happened, though.
---
I am thinking about implementing the adr_backup.sh at a customerŽs
site for testing. I will backup the generated tarballs via VPN using
my Amanda-testing-server here. I am looking forward to test Amanda
thru firewalls. Tasty brainfood ;-)
I think it would be a pretty cool way to save the metadata using
Amanda itself. The client is installed on the machine anyway, just
compiling it with some extra-options, opening some ports on the
firewall, some cronjob on your Amanda-server and we have the ADR-data
right at our hands.
I will test this in the next days, just waiting for the admin of my
customers isp to open the ports, tunneling thru ssh didnŽt work out
until now.
---
best regards,
Stefan
