If the Mail Boat Service didntqualify us as far as weather was concerned, then nothing ever would. And if I looked as big a fool as I felt, then Id need to besorry for the success of our venture. Wed try and make for an hotel and get some inwardcomfort.
The next day we werethe recipients of quite a choice selection of signals. It was a great bigcumbersome teakwood affair, weighing a couple of tons.
Yes, tons of water, where I had said there wasnt!
A fair sized wardroom, and best of all, my own cabin to sulkin. Fortunately they were too far away for us to hear what THEYhad to say.
For be it known that there will be a full score and more eager toaccept every single vacancy.
So I went to work and formed my classes, bluffed out a syllabus, and turned out qualified Observers.
Up on deck like a shot I went, but coming up out of thelight, I could see nothing. Take it round with me when Imsounding ship? Another line is procured and bent-on, then away they goagain.
The heat of thestokehold alone, when driving under the last ounce of steam, wasterrible.
In those days they only came within a few degrees ofthe absolute perpendicular. Another shotgets him and he dips sharply by the tail.
No fireman came ashore from the MailBoat, with his pay in his pocket but chalked one up for Ned.
Still that was no sort ofexcuse for opening fire before they even got in range. Meantime I clumped off back, smock, seaboots and all. Forcing the Merchant Service man into Navy ways was almost as hard asmaking water run uphill.
It isa great game teaching others what you dont know yourself.
Up on deck like a shot I went, but coming up out of thelight, I could see nothing.
We sailed away merrily into the teeth of a S.
Then told off with their PettyOfficers for that particular job. I jumped on board the old hooker for a quick look round.
Rightly or wrongly I always like to size up each man individually formyself.
White fronts, white roofs, and even white chimneys. I jumped on board the old hooker for a quick look round.
Anaeroplane formed the guiding star and gave directions by wireless backto the station ashore. All this I carefully coded, and ascarefully tapped out. Unfortunately, and to my bitter disappointment, I was not in at the death.
The powers wereconcerned that the submarine was merely using this place to take in oil.
Another shotgets him and he dips sharply by the tail.
My craft was a pure and simple Brixham smack, with noattempt to disguise the discomforts. The weather easingdown, we cruised along close in shore making slowly for Berry Head.
