Yes, it is incredibly slow. 2.53 brings some improvements. Most of
the loss is due to tracking the call stack. As soon as I have time, I
want to implement this within M4 itself, it should considerably
improve the performances.

Well, we tried to speed it up, config.status too, while also making
them safer. On average they remained comparable to their previous
versions.
