/usr/bin/m4 is the m4 that comes with BSD - I assume you didn't replace it..
So, do you have a /usr/local/bin/m4? In which case renaming it to
/usr/local/bin/gm4 might help. (I usually use --program-prefix=g when
configuring gnu m4 in the first place)
