Actually, `test -f foo' only fails on foo.exe on DJGPP (at least,
according to claims - I don't have a DJGPP environment to test on) - it
works on cygwin.
$ gcc -o foo foo.c
$ ls
foo.c foo.exe
$ test -f foo; echo $?
0
$ test -x foo; echo $?
0
$ test -f none; echo $?
1
$ test -x none; echo $?
1
