By defining your own macros. You could pretty much wrap your entire configure.ac in: AC_DEFUN([MY_MAC],[ ......everything..... ]) move it to a mystuff.m4 and reduce configure.ac to: AC_INIT AC_CONFIG_SRCDIR AC_CONFIG_AUX_DIR MY_MAC
