Sounds like the configure file might be corrupted?

Did they rerun autoconf? If so, what versions of autoconf and m4? I
know that m4 1.4.10 (several versions ago) was broken for BSD and Mac
OS, and generated corrupt configure files if they were larger than half
a megabyte, so smaller projects did not suffer, but large projects like
emacs would be susceptible. But that was quite a while ago.
