That's not nice. The reason i left uisp aside and started with
avrprog was that i've got a couple of devices (one AT90S1200, one
AT90S2333) that misread their signature. One reads as 0xff, 0xff,
0xff (this possibility is even described in the AVR910 appnote), the
'1200 reads out as 0x00, 0x00, 0x00.
So it's obviously easy to trash the signature ID. AVR910 explicitly
requires a programmer to allow programming anyway.
