This is exactly what Knuth did for Metafont.
By the way, I rather like the scheme
<version> = <year>.<month>
which seems to by the Tim Daly's internal numbering. It makes much sense,
especially if releases are sheduled 1 per month. Many projects (Gentoo and
Ubuntu, for example) use such scheme.
