Whether you connect via a proxy or not can be quite transparent
to you - they hide everywhere these days: inside NAT routers,
in ISP firewalls, and NSA computers... A proxy is just a stateful
process that sits between you and the rest of the world, limiting
the type of transactions that can pass on a given port (and doing
whatever else they want to do with your transactions).
But you might be right that you are not behind such a proxy.
Anyway, the idea that proxies can cause problems with the WebDAV
protocol used by SVN seems to be quite common on the Web. But
(usually) this does not apply to encrypted transactions sent via
https. And we are already use https.
