Actually, I'd need a more original form, namely without the patch
* 01/19/92 RSS Change to use \[ \] instead of $$ $$
since currently we output $$ delimiters, together with \leqno(42).
I wonder: do we *ever* output tex code that doesn't start and end with $$???
