Summary: free xsl-fo formatter
Initial Comment:
There is a need for a free xsl-fo formatter.
The one now in use is XEP, a proprietary formatter though not costing any money
as long as it is for personal use.
There is another reason why another xsl-fo formatter is needed. The footnotes
are now written one below the other, but it would save a lot of space if these
could be all written in one block at the bottom of the page, or in two blocks,
one block per column.
Ideas:
Needs to be based on Pango to support minority languages.
Two stages, actually two programs, see XEP intermediate format. First stage
lays the text out. Last stage produces PDF. Stage one can pipe into stage two.
C++ as this is easier writing.
Take examples from xmlroff and learn from it.
To reduce memory usage, consider multiple passes filling in labels in
subsequent passes. If a pass changes the layout, use that label, and format
everything again.
