Hello!

I can't see an option to change the built-in viewer name to something more reasonable, for example texdoc. The previous version had such an
option.

The builtin viewer for what?

I didn't see any built-in viewer,

For what? When doing what?

I don't know. You introduced this built-in viewer which never introduced to me.

and it never showed up for me. There was always xpdf or xdvi opened
without my explicite wish. The only reasonable choice is texdoc, of
course!

Last time I looked, texdoc could not deal with source specials and had
special search paths wired in.

Did you take a look at

No. I instantly thought of customising since I knew what I am wishing and what works, with or without special paths or applications to handle a particular file format. That's the great advantage: make it right once, and save time on the bug-auctex list!
