I moved to a new installation, Mac OS X 10.8.2, and TeXLive 2012 got broken. 
After reinstallation (using MacTeX), no problems.

But should not 'configure' check if the STIX Fonts and LuaTex are available and 
use them - this would bring proper UTF-8 support.
