blank ddd menubar

version 3.3.1-4

My menubar comes up blank. You can pass the cursor over where the menu
items should be and the little hint gets displayed at the bottom of ddd.
And if you click where a menu item should be, a drop-down window happens,
but the only text is for the shortcut keys.

Can anyone suggest how I can get text to show for the menubar?
