FPAT doesn't handle embedded newlines. If that's not a problem,
then yes, FPAT will do the trick.
In any case, I'm not planning to change gawk.
Ed, if you're desperate, we can talk about a small consulting job
for me to supply you a personal source code patch, but let's
do that offline.
