"Could not create directory" msg when starting ggradebook.

I just downloaded and built ggradebook on a NetBSD system.
Whenever I start ggradebook a dialog appears asking for a
directory in which to place files.  Regardless of whether
I enter an existing or a non-existent directory, the program
exits with code 01 after printing the message:

   [FAILED] Could not create directory! Directory must not exist!

I tried tracking down the error with gdb.  It happens somewhere
inside gtk_main.  I also attempted to visit the ggradebook web
site, but received the message "Unable to connect to server".

Any help would be appreciated.  Let me know if you would like 
more information than that given below.
