Subject: glibc problem? system locks HARD

Hi,

Until until about 2 months ago I ran libc 5.4.38.
Back then I tried to get kde2 to work for me, it would compile, but when
running, a lot of things would segfault. gcc is 2.95.2, kernel was the
2.2 series, nothing fancy compiled in..no I2C, USB, sound, or
power management.
xfree was 3.3.6.
Running PR440FX mobo with dual ppro 200s, SCSI drives, 384MB ram, Diamond
Stealth 2000
I finally broke down and upgraded to glibc 2.1.3.
Upgrade seemed to go fine, installed the libraries, recompiled binutils
and compiler as libc6, etc..programs compile and run fine as libc6
binaries.
So now I recompile kde2 and it compiles and installs fine, but when I run
it it gets to 100% done, and sometimes to the welcome screen, and the
system locks HARD, and i'm forced to hard-reset.
I tried upgrading xfree, i used 4.0.1 binaries and even compiled 4.0.1
from source, all with still the same result.
I tried upgrading the kernel, no effect. I tried the 2.4 series kernel,
same result, still locks.
The basic tvm under X runs fine.
I also tried compiling and running enlightenment. Has the same exact
effect as KDE. Locks the system. So it's not KDE, and i'm guessing it's
not X or the kernel.
the only thing i can come up with is a glibc problem.

does anyone have any ideas or advice?
i can provide the X config file, or any other system info, if needed.

Thanx,

-Tony
