Sorry, that was my fault.
I too seldom install a new glibc and the installation of glibc-2.2.3
worked with the kernel current at that time.
configured with --enable-kernel=2.2.19 --with-headers=/usr/src/linux_2.2.19
all tests passed.
I am now up and happy with glibc-2.2.4.
