glibc compile error on Itanium

Hello,

I was attempting to compile and install glibc-2.2.4 on Turbo Linux 7.0 on an 
Itanium with kernel version 2.4.4-010508-18smp and gcc version 
2.96-ia64-000717 . The steps followed were as follows:
1) Untarred the glibc-2.2.4 sources along with the glibc-linuxthreads 
untarred within the source tree of glibc
2)  ./configure --enable-add-ons=linuxthreads --prefix=/u
sr/ia64-linuxglibc2
3) make

The error I got looked like this:
 cat Versions.def \
 | sed '/^[    ]*#/d;s/^[      ]*%/#/' | gcc -E -undef -I. -Iinclude 
-include sysdeps/../config.h -x assembler-with-cpp - | sed '/^[   ]*#/d;/^[  
     ]*$/d'; \

make: *** [sysdeps/../Versions.all] Error 139
