glibc-2.3 question

I am attempting to update my system and i have run into a problem.  In order 
to install XFree86 i needed a newer version of glibc.  I downloaded 
glibc-2.3 from the tar.gz packages and installed it.  However, when i went 
to install XFree86 it said that i was running glibc-2.1.  How do i get my 
system to recognize the new installation?  Do i just need symbolic links to 
in some special directory to the .so files, or is it more involved?  Any 
help would be greatly appreciated.
