Informatics E-learning Seminar engaged Captive Audience at Career Fair 2003

The question, "What is e-learning?" was hanging on the minds of the
audience at Career Fair 2003: Today's Challenges, Tomorrow's Opportunities
Seminar, that took place on Friday, 7 March 2003 at Suntec City Convention
& Exhibition Centre in Singapore. The person who answered this question was
none other than Mr Man Mohan Kapur, Executive Director of Informatics
Holdings Ltd. Through this seminar, the evolution of e-learning was traced
and the possibilities of future e-learning features was presented.

(Embedded image moved to file: pic06902.pcx)"It was a definite pleasure to
share my experience in the field of e-learning to a group of attentive
audience who responded positively. Many showed keen interest and approached
me for further questions after the seminar was concluded," commented Man
Mohan.
Man Mohan traced the progress of e-learning: yesterday, today and tomorrow.
e-learning as defined by him is "learning with the aid of technology, not
just the Internet". Indeed, to better augment a learner's holistic
e-learning perspective, Man Mohan also talked about the benefits
introducing of blended learning as follows
ð Learner / Student Centricity
ð Modular Training Materials, also called Re-usable Learning Objects
ð Anytime, anywhere
ð Flexibility in delivery modes
ð Administrative, Billing Tracking and other support flexibility

(Embedded image moved to file: pic14962.pcx) "Mr Kapur had certainly
provided us with a very comprehensive overview and constructive opinions
on the concept of e-learning. He also gave us a very enlightening
perspective on how we can benefit from blended learning study with
Informatics and numerous benefits to e-learning that I had never realised.
In addition, we were cautioned on the likely pitfalls of e-learning too. I
thoroughly enjoyed this presentation. I'm glad that I had attended this
seminar! " beamed Ms Joanna Lim.

The advancement of technology in e-learning is not infallible and could
backfire if one is unable to utilise e-learning in an appropriate manner.
Examples of some pitfalls are:

1. Replacing face-to-face classes with e-learning for all types of subjects
2. Lack of personal motivation and support from colleagues/family/friends
3. Lack of preparedness of technical issues or problems
4. Failure to take cultural and regional differences into consideration

(Embedded image moved to file: pic00123.pcx)"E-learning must be viewed as a
total solution to realize the full potential of effective learning. The
best example is PurpleTrain.com which commits to be a learner centric
e-learning platform that provides a 24x7 help desk," added Man Mohan.
Another participant of the seminar, Ms Angeline Lee added, "It has been an
eye-opener for me to know the possibilities of the different courses
available via the e-learning mode. I will definitely conduct my research
for my education pathway with Purpletrain.com."

With the many derived benefits of e-learning and blended learning through
the wide range of Higher Education programmes offered by Informatics, why
hesitate?
