hsearch 2nd probe is constant

Playing around with hsearch()/hsearch_r() I noticed that the
2nd probe always went to the same spot, which will therefore
be useless every time but one.  The probes seemed to be the linear
sequence H, -2, -H-4, -2H-6, etc.

I hope someone will mail me a response, as it's got my curiosity
aroused.
