glibc-2.3.3 on ftp.gnu.org does not compile

Hi,

I noticed that glibc-2.3.3 had appeared on
ftp.gnu.org, and so I downloaded it and tried
compiling it. The build failed, and a web-search
revealed that other people are also having the same
problem:

e.g.
http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/bug-glibc/2004-09/msg00237.html
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/archive/13/2004/05/1/174513

Moreover, even when I did finally manage to get it to
build, after patching elf/dl-runtime.c etc, and using:

CFLAGS='-O2 -fno-unit-at-a-time'
/usr/src/glibc-2.3.3/configure --prefix=/usr
--with-headers=/home/chris/linux-2.6.8/include
--with-tls --enable-kernel=2.6.5 --enable-add-ons

the final glibc failed 'make check' in the locales
check (couldn't find a locale called no_NB, or
similar) and in the maths check. Needless to say that
I did not install.

The CPU on this machine is a 1 GHz PIII, binutils is
2.15 and the compiler is gcc-3.4.2, which should all
be more than adequate.

I am sure that these problems in glibc have been fixed
long since Aug 03 2004, which is the timestamp of the
archive on ftp.gnu.org. So can you please either
update or delete these glibc-2.3.3 archives, as you
are currently only confusing your users.

Thank you,
Chris Rankin

P.S. Installing Fedora on this machine, along with all
its accompanying baggage, really *isn't* an option.
