How to get gdb to trace through gmp?

I'm a novice at using gdb, so please bear with the dumb questions:

First, is gmp compiled using the -g option?  The makefiles are so 
complicated, I can't find a CFLAGS option anywhere with the -g.  Can 
it be added from the command line?

Second, and in general:  are there any performance penalties for 
using -g?  Size penalties, surely; I'm not concerned about that.

Third, how do I get gdb to recognize and include gmp sourcefiles in 
its disgorgements?
