Thank you. I know that MacOS X comes with GCC, and further, I am told that
GNU tools for the most of time compiles straight off.

But I do not now have MacOS X. (In fact, the PPC computer I have now is not
even capable of running MacOS X, as it only runs on top of a G3 or G4 CPU.)
