Hmm.  Nothing obvious stands out as to what might be wrong.

That suggests the asm code might be doubtful, though it has been
tested so perhaps there's something more subtle going on.

Yes, the generic C doesn't promise any great speed.  It's possible the
tests are a touch excessive in places too, but no one's forced to run
them :).
