I think GMP 3.1.1 has problems on that platform.  GMP 4.0 will be
available in a day or two from

        ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/gmp/gmp-4.0.tar.gz

and mirrors of ftp.gnu.org.  It's been tested on irix 6, if you'd like
to give it a try and report again if you have any problems.

GMP supports multiple ABIs on irix 6 (n32 and 64), so you might need
to follow the instructions in the manual to choose the one you want.
Or maybe gcc 2.8 only supports 32-bits, I'm not sure.
