Check the mailing list archives.  This exact issue was brought up a
few months ago, and I submitted some pathces that should fix the
problem.  Basically, there are two problems: m4 is broken and the
default assembler syntax doesn't work with OS X's assembler.  The
first can be fixed either by judiciously editing config.m4 or by
running gm4 instead.  The second can be fixed by editing the configure
script (line 4356).
