Thanks, I missed that.  I think I'll go with a "sed 1q" in the initial
--version invocation,

        tmp_version=`($1 --version | sed 1q) 2>&AC_FD_CC`

Alway a bit fragile trying to parse out version numbers I guess.  If
the whole test can't be eliminated it might be best to just look for
the bad versions, and let everything else though.
