We've had joy from the Apple hacked gcc 2.95.2, not sure we've tried
this 3.1 before.

To get something working, you can force that with
./configure gmp_cv_asm_underscore=yes
(I think the right answer is yes.)

That seems to have been truncated somehow, it should be a lot longer,
and near the end have something about "checking if globals are
prefixed by underscore".
