Libtool ought to be passing .libs/assert.o to the linker.  You could
try to see where it's has gone wrong if you're brave, but it could be
quite tricky.

We've had joy on a solaris 8 with I think gcc 3.2, where it uses "gcc
-shared" to link.

You might be able to do a --disable-shared build to get something
going.
