Dynamic runtime failure.

From: Carlos D. Garza
Subject: Dynamic runtime failure.
Date: Sat, 27 Mar 2004 18:03:20 -0600

    My problem is for somereason my programs segfault when I compile
them to be linked to libgmp dynamicly. They only seem to work when
staticly linked.

The version of libgmp thats giving me the headache is the one I got
from "ftp://mirrors.kernel.org/gnu/gmp/gmp-4.1.2.tar.gz";.
the URL that led me to that file was
"http://www.swox.com/gmp/#DOWNLOAD";

I'm useing a Mandrake 8.2 system. And just downloaded and compiled the source
for libgmp. The tarball I got was
ftp://mirrors.kernel.org/gnu/gmp/gmp-4.1.2.tar.gz

My compiler is

address@hidden 4363]$ gcc -v
Reading specs from /usr/lib/gcc-lib/i586-mandrake-linux-gnu/2.96/specs
gcc version 2.96 20000731 (Mandrake Linux 8.2 2.96-0.76mdk)

according to /proc/cpuinfo my processor is
address@hidden proc]$ cat cpuinfo
processor       : 0
vendor_id       : GenuineIntel
cpu family      : 15
model           : 2

fdiv_bug        : no

pse36 clflush dts acpi mmx fxsr sse sse2 ss ht tm
bogomips        : 2981.88

I ran
./configure
./make
./makeinstall
ldconfig

to install the new library on my system. All programs that use the libgmp
library compile fine but segfault when executed. Even programs that do not
use the libgmp library functions will segfault. How ever if I compile those
same programs staticly they execute properly.

For Example

address@hidden demos]# cc -o pexpr pexpr.c -lgmp
address@hidden demos]# ./pexpr 5^5
Segmentation fault
address@hidden demos]# cc --static -o pexpr pexpr.c -lgmp
address@hidden demos]# ./pexpr 5^5
3125

Even programs that don't use libgmp functions segfault as well.
Take this program for example
#include<stdio.h>

int main()
  {
   printf("This program isn't even useing libgmp\n");
   return(0);
  }

Watch what happens when I compile it with libgmp

address@hidden gmp-4.1.2]# cc -o test test.c -lgmp
address@hidden gmp-4.1.2]# ./test
Segmentation fault
address@hidden gmp-4.1.2]# cc --static -o test test.c -lgmp
address@hidden gmp-4.1.2]# ./test
This program isn't even useing libgmp

 Why is the library broken when I link dynamicly. I even checked to see if
this was a conflict with another version of libgmp on my system and there is
not. I even checked to see if the program is linking properly.

address@hidden demos]# cc -o pexpr pexpr.c -lgmp
address@hidden demos]# ldd pexpr
        libgmp.so.3 => /usr/local/lib/libgmp.so.3 (0x40026000)
        libc.so.6 => /lib/libc.so.6 (0x40051000)
        /lib/ld-linux.so.2 => /lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0x40000000)

/usr/local/lib/libgmp.so.3 is the freshly made library I just installed.

So for a linux user such as my self do you know of a stable version of libgmp
I can use? Prefably one that allows dynamic linkage? Also since your bug faq
mentioned it, here is the contents of my config.log below.
