Hi Gerald,

Interestingly, AM_GNU_GETTEXT is called in line 183, but apparently
automake failed to recognize it. Both AM_GNU_GETTEXT and
AM_GNU_GETTEXT_VERSION are defined in gettext.m4, which is
usually installed by gettext under $prefix/share/aclocal.
If this file is not found there, autorecoonf will produce
the above diagnostics.

To say the truth, I've had quite a lot of unpleasant experience
with software installed from "ports" on FreeBSD, and this case
seems to be just another one in the row. Usually I advise
uninstalling autoconf/automake/gettext and installing them
from tarballs obtained from ftp.gnu.org. I understand, though,
that this solution might not be acceptable to you.

Yes, you're right :) Thanks for the suggestion.

No, it is not normal. However, subversions.gnu.org recently does exhibit
unusual delays and somtimes denies servicing. Apparently it is working
under considerable load, but I hope its admins will soon cope with
the situation.

Sergey
