Follow-up Comment #26, bug #17717 (project gnustep):

This never happens for me ... it all just works fine.
However. it does give a clue ... since, when I tried it, I noticed that
adding or removing search options causes the window to be resized. 
Possibly something odd is happening with the events from X telling us about
the new window sizing.
It would be interesting if you could run GWorkspace with --GNU-Debug=NSEvent
logging on, and perform the operations that cause the display to go wrong
...
If we can pin down the events immediately preceding the display corruption we
should be able to see what's going wrong.
