this is what I was hoping to be answered: it menas that the file is
actually different and hence having the really fixed tarball eliminates
the problems.

But, alas, I cannot think of where I made the mistake: just downloaded
the file from http://gnuzilla.gnu.org/download with wget and run md5sum
on it.

Would you please crosscheck my procedure and md5 checksum generation?

Just:

wget http://gnuzilla.gnu.org/download/icecat-3-g1.tar.bz2
md5sum icecat-3-g1.tar.bz2

Do you get the md5 checksum quoted by giuseppe?
Is the URL correct?
