I'm glad it worked for you.
I looked into what the "fix" actually does, and it turns out the hardware
acceleration menu toggle changes both
layers.acceleration.disabled
and
gfx.direct2d.disabled
IceCat 31.8.0-2 has
layers.acceleration.disabled true
and
gfx.direct2d.disabled false
Setting
gfx.direct2d.disabled true
allows IceCat to run.
layers.acceleration.disabled
can be set to either true or false.
A more technical solution is outside my field, but at the least, when WER
prompts to debug the crash in MSVC2013, the dialogue steers me to d2d1.dll and
DrawingContext::GetPixelSize(void) and mov dword ptr [edx],ecx
