Follow-up Comment #16, bug #64421 (project groff):

FYI, this is also relatively easy to reproduce from the Arch Linux
installation medium. It is not graphical but it can be done with pdftotext.
The "gnome-boxes" program make it straightforward to boot up a qemu instance
with it.

Once you are in the installation medium, do:

pacman -S groff  # to update the groff version

use the repro steps as discussed below

pacman -S python-pdftotext
pdftotext foo.pdf
cat foo.txt  # prints "black"
