In that case, I'm happy to treat it as a bug in old versions of screen.

I suspect that whatever it does is unlikely to be something I'm going to 
want to do. There will be few users who can't upgrade their screen to 
post-4.0.0. I see that 4.0.0 was released in 2003, so this really shouldn't 
be a problem much longer.
