Follow-up Comment #1:
This is the way symbolic links work in UNIX systems. Any attempt to modify
(chmod, chown, etc.) the symbolic link itself results in a mod to the target,
not to the link.
According to the symlink man page:
"The permissions of a symbolic link are irrelevant; the ownership is ignored
when following the link, but is checked when removal or renaming of the link
is requested and the link is in a directory with the sticky bit (S_ISVTX)
set."
I'm guessing this issue does not come up often.
