Some notes about full featured image viewers.
Doesn't mean i expect gcmd to include that soon, or at least say within
a few weeks ;)

* gqview preloads the next image, which is not a bad idea, especially
  with huge ones. They seem to have a very good process management,
  i can resize the window or widget frames even when large images are loading,
  and you won't even notice the background preloading.
  Perhaps it could be limited to some configurable value, either plain MB or
  percentage of free mem...

* Another thing i like with gqview is, it can reuse available .xvpics.
  I appreciate if large images (up to 50MB, on my old box) don need to be
  rethumbed eve and ever again...there are two implementations, the gnome
  shared thumbnail cache (~/.thumbnails) and local .xvpics subfolders.
  The latter has the benefit, if you burn on DVD the thumbs are shipped, too.
  Both lack clean-up, and i use to delet the gnome cache regularily.
  What i don't like with gnome thumbs is, cryptified filenames.
  xzgv has 'update thumbnails' feature for .xvpics.

* gqview preferences has chooser for zoom quality (-> speed).

* i can't help but pseudo-zooming into a large images of galaxies or
   interstellar nebula with scroll-wheel is the most awesome thing i can
imagine
   to do with image viewers....it was worth hours of expensive download, way
back
   in the 56k-link time, and will be worth slaving for the bucks to get a
hotter box.
   Try <http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/imagegallery/image_feature_476.html> !
    (7.8 MB)

* Especially in fullscreen mode  = )

* Especially specially with *black* default background  = )   = )
