I believe I've found the way to reduce the loss in gradients,

here is the original...

almost no difference!!...the loss is about 5% (imperceptible to sight)


even in a bigger image (1024 x 768) (indexed of course)...

The key is keeping the difference between stops in a range of the 20-25%...

About the color, I've tried black and grey keeping percentages, but it 
should work with any color...i think is a step forward...
