zerk and ubxtool provide direct access. Yes, you are out of luck for
devices other than u-blox or Javad. But why does anyone want direct
access?
If you know someone that wants to maintain it, have at it!

Well, ttyACM0 is USB, and the other is serial. You don't know if your
device is USB or serial? How about lsusb?

I wish it duplicated the functionality, but not even close. Mostly it
just confuses people.

I see you got over your fear. What distro? Why would it fail an
assertion? That would mean a compile or build error.

As you mention, some people still use it, and it does some things
no other tool does. At a minimum it should not assert.
