On SuSE 13.1 I did
git clone git://git.savannah.gnu.org/groff.git
cd groff
git checkout automake
./bootstrap
cd build-aux/
../configure
make -j
sudo make install
installed groff at /usr/local/bin/groff
As far as I could see, no errors or warnings in the build process.
