In my retirement hobby/business of running a photographic studio I keep  
my records in a GNU recfile (the simplest method I could find).  Using  
shell scripts heavily reliant on awk which are then piped through groff  
I produce booking confirmations, model releases, and invoices as  
properly typeset PDFs containing the studio logo, background images,  
with "fill in the blanks" and "sign on the dotted line".

My models and clients are always impressed by the quality of my  
paperwork.  Sadly, they often comment on the versatility of Excel.
