Yeah.  This looks very much like the pathetic, bad-habit-instilling
"homework" assignments that we see frequently in #bash.

People who teach their students to write scripts like this are the
reason the Internet is clogged with horrible examples and misinformation.
It's a vicious cycle.

However, I am perfectly willing to believe that the original poster is
trying to teach himself Bash from some guide that he found somewhere
on the Web, whether that guide was originally part of a formal classroom
setting or not.  There are way too many bad guides out there.
