I also don't get it right by default
(i.e., just by installing Emacs from the
repos).
And check the docstring for `source-directory':
source-directory is a variable defined in
`C source code'. Its value is
"/build/emacs24-MFg3PI/emacs24-24.4+1/debian/build-x/"
Documentation:
Directory in which Emacs sources were found
when Emacs was built. You cannot count on
them to still be there!
