[Help-smalltalk] undeclared variable x

hello,

so i decided learn gnu smalltalk. (I *would* use squeak, but there is no
lightning inside).

i've got a small problem with gst and it's manual:

address@hidden:~ > gst
GNU Smalltalk Ready

st> x := Array new: 20 !
stdin:1: assignment to undeclared variable x
st> 


I copied this line from the manual. After the printNl stuff, this would
be the first really interesting line :-)  but it doesn't work :-(

any help?
