If you have the bandwidth, download VisualWorks Non-Commercial. It has a good
Smalltalk tutorial and lots of documentation and examples (and frameworks,
libraries, that you can inspect to see how they solved certain problems). It
also features goodr browsers and a good subdivision of the class library, so
it might help more in getting you acquainted with Smalltalk than either GNU
Smalltalk (which - IMVHO - at the moment is more geared towards people who
already know Smalltalk) or Squeak (which in fact is not about Smalltalk at all
;-))
I have bought these three books:
- Smalltak Best Practice Patterns (Kent Beck)
- Smalltalk, Objects and Design (Chamon Liu)
- The Art and Science of Smalltalk (Simon Lewis)
and I couldn't recommend one - they're all quite complementary. I also scoured
lots of websites for tutorials; I don't have a list of URL's handy (but I
think that www.smalltalk.org might have pointers). I do know that I needed to
combine the knowledge from multiple tutorials and introductory documents to
get a good overview, but that's always a useful thing to do with information
you get from the Internet.
